About Dr. Guterman
For more than 25 years, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, Irvin A. Guterman, MD, FAAOS, has provided the highest caliber of orthopaedic care at the Greater Washington Orthopaedic Group, PA, in the Washington, D.C., area. The renowned medical practice now has three locations in Silver Spring, GermanTown, and Rockville, Maryland.
Dr. Guterman specializes in sports medicine, general orthopaedics, total joint replacement surgeries, and injuries from work or motor vehicle accidents. He offers personalized, comprehensive, and state-of-the-art treatments for all knee conditions.
Dr. Guterman received his undergraduate degree from the George Washington University, where he also attended medical school, graduating in 1983. He finished an internship and general surgery training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences before completing his orthopaedic surgery training in 1990, with a focus on total joint replacement, back and sports injuries, and trauma, at the University of Virginia Medical School, where he was also chief resident in orthopaedic surgery.
Dr. Guterman has also received a fellowship studying bone and joint abnormalities. His research has resulted in numerous publications, presentations, and awards.
As a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Guterman stays active in his field. He is president of the Greater Washington Orthopaedic Group, and he is the CEO of the Piccard Surgery Center in Maryland.
Dr. Guterman’s overarching philosophy is to listen to each patient and understand the unique needs of every individual, provide compassionate care, and devise a personalized treatment plan to achieve optimal health.
Dr. Guterman resides with his beloved wife and their three sons in Potomac, Maryland. As dynamic members of the community, Dr. Guterman and his wife, Barbara, participate in numerous philanthropic endeavors and special needs youth-related groups and activities, including the Autism Speaks Bike to the Beach, KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) Greater DC, and Bullis School Athletics.
Dr. Guterman is an avid cyclist, athlete, and runner. He’s especially interested in the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries and the pivotal role of exercise in enhancing overall health and wellness.
